Blood Work And Your Pet
Why do we recommend blood work before your pet has an anesthetic procedure?
At Cedar Creek we offer pre-anesthetic blood work before your pet undergoes an anesthetic procedure. This blood work is performed in-house, with results in 10 minutes, allowing for immediate treatment of your pet. If results are normal we can rule out certain diseases and also get a baseline blood panel for your pet. If results are abnormal, we can focus on discussing a treatment plan for your pet and what the next steps are. Providing the best care possible and making sure your pet is safe to undergo anesthesia is our number one priority.
When we use the term ‘blood work’ it usually entails a Complete Blood Count (CBC) and a serum chemistry panel. A CBC looks at red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelet counts. It provides detailed information about each of these different cell types. If the cell blood counts are not normal, such as anemia (low red blood cells) or inflammation (high white blood cells), it might be advised that surgery is delayed. A serum chemistry panel gives us information about your pet's liver, kidneys, pancreas, electrolytes, as well as hydration and blood sugar status.
Each anesthetic patient receives their own protocol. The anesthetic agents we use filter through your pet's organs and are eliminated by your pet's organs, such as the liver and kidneys. If the blood work shows these are not functioning properly, your pet may not be a safe candidate for anesthesia, and may have an underlying health issue. Pet’s can’t say how they are feeling. Some pets hide illnesses very well so performing annual exams and blood work play a key role in ensuring your pet lives a long, healthy, happy life.
